How to Write a Great Advertising Headline

How to Write a Great Advertising HeadlineHow to Write a Great Advertising HeadlineFrom the early days of advertising to todays social media posts, headlines are one of the most important aspects of any advertising campaign. A great headline can turn a prospective customer into a sale- for life. But what is the difference between a headline that just gets the job done, and a headline that really gets under the skin of the consumer? First, a look at what a headline is. What Is a Headline in Advertising? A headline in advertising grabs a readers attention much like a newspapers headline. An advertising headline is designed to be the first copy the potential customer reads, and it is usually written by a copywriter (but can also be crafted by a copywriter/art director team, or anyone in the creative department). Bold text, large font size, and various colors are some of the methods used to make the headline stand out from the copy. A headline must be written well in order to be effec tive and draw the reader into the ad. Types of Headlines There are generally two kinds of headlines. The first type works hand-in-hand with an image. If the ad is done well, both elements work in conjunction to create an ad greater than the sum of its parts. A classic example of this is the Volkswagon ad featuring a mechanic lying underneath the psychiatrists couch, with the headline are we driving our mechanics too hard? The headline alone is not a great one. The image alone is confusing. But together, they create a pithy, memorable ad. The other kind of headline is one that does not need an image- or has an image that doesnt add anything to the headline. One only has to look at the classic GE ad, we bring good things to life. Traditionally, the latter was how advertisements were created, printed, and published for decades. A copywriter would work up the headline and body copy for an ad. That ad would then go to the art department, where an art director and/or designer would c reate imagery that played off the headline in some way or complimented it somehow. This was an old-fashioned way to do advertising but was the cornerstone of every ad created in the forties, fifties, and early sixties. Then, Bill Bernbach came along. He revolutionized the industry by putting art directors and copywriters together as teams. Instead of copy coming first, and an image created to accompany it, the entire ad campaign was created by the team. Maybe the image came first. Maybe the idea was formulated, and the headline and image came after it. This formula is the foundation upon which all modern advertising is built. How to Write Great Headlines A great headline starts with a great creative brief. In fact, many creative directors believe that the unique selling proposition (USP) in a brief is the first headline ever written for the campaign. It is the job of the creative department to write better headlines than that. An example comes from John Hiney, an account direct or on Abbey Life critical illness insurance, who wrote the USP, Dont let your illness cripple your family. Its a powerful headline and a powerful USP. Once you have a great creative brief, learn everything you can about the product or service that you are advertising. If possible, have it in front of you, on your desk. If its a car, drive it. If its a massage therapist, get a massage. You need to immerse yourself in the product. Next, look at where the ad will go. Is it going on a billboard in Times Square? Will it go into a magazine? If so, which one? Drill down to where in the magazine. Back page, center spread, opposite the contents page? Finally, start writing. Dont worry about being clever or creating amazing headlines from the get-go. Just start writing. Write product benefits. Write experiences. Write gut reactions to the product. Write words that will connect the consumer to the essence of the product or service. You want to get it all down on paper (yes, ideally paper) so t hat ideas can start to form, and merge together, on the page. Look back at your ideas, and you will start to see connections. Words will jump out. Phrases will pop. Suddenly, two seemingly unrelated thoughts combine to become a smart, compelling headline. 25 of Advertisings Best Headlines There are thousands upon thousands of headlines that deserve to be considered for this list. But there are some that simply rise above, and are just impossible to forget. Here are 25 headlines that deserve their place in advertising history. Choosing Between Selling for a Large or Small Company

Choosing Between Selling for a Large or Small CompanyChoosing Between Selling for a Large or Small CompanyWhen it comes to geschftliches miteinanderes, there are three sizes small, medium and large. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks. But if you are deciding between accepting a sales position with either a large organization or a small business, there are some important factors you should consider before accepting the offer. Available Resources One clear advantage of working for a large company is the number of resources that will be available to you. In most large sales organizations, there are existing sales hilfe teams, established subject matter experts, a team of tenured sales professionals and a management team that knows their way around the sales bullpen. With small companies, resources are usually much mora scarce. Sales support and administrative assistance is an unusual luxury, and both sales teams and the management team could be either non-existent or very limit ed in size. If you feel that you need access to resources, hate doing all of your own paperwork, and prefer having plenty of co-workers to bounce ideas off of, a large company would be a better fit for you. Agility The ability to respond quickly to rapidly changing market conditions often makes the difference between companies that succeed and those that struggle. Many large businesses lack the agility that smaller companies enjoy, due entirely to their size. A sales organization with 10,000 employees simply cant make global changes overnight, while a sales business with 10 employees could reasonably make course corrections within an 8-hour work day. The old expression that says it takes time for a large ship to make a turn holds very true when it comes to the challenges faced by large companies when market conditions demand a change in focus. You need to have a deep understanding of the industry you are getting into and determine if the need for rapid change is important. If so , and if you are comfortable with change, a small business would suit you well. Job Security Despite the fact that large businesses often have cutbacks, they do provide more job security than smaller companies. This is usually due to the fact that large, established companies have investors, a board of directors, and a slew of other interested parties that are very involved in the companys solvency. One way that many large companies stay in business is by acquiring smaller companies, thus capturing their market share, intellectual property, and talent. Smaller companies are at a much higher risk of going out of business due in large part to the fact that there are usually just one or a few owners who may pass away, retire, or have something happen to them that interrupts their ability to lead or run the company. Large businesses enjoy the ability to plug someone else into a vacated position. For job security, large is better Advancement Opportunities There is no question tha t one of the most attractive benefits to larger companies is the advancement opportunities they offer. In very small businesses, there really is nowhere to go except ownership or to another company. The opposite is true for large sales companies. From sales management or sales director to positions like sales support specialists, opportunities abound. If you have your sights on management, fix your gaze on larger companies. Benefits As far as benefits are concerned, it really comes down to the individual company. In general, larger companies have more affordable health benefits due to their ability to negotiate more attractive rates with the insurance company. Conversely, smaller companies may offer lower employee contribution rates to attract candidates away from larger companies. Retirement accounts are fairly common but larger companies usually have better employee matching programs. Lastly, while pension plans are few and far between, your chances of getting a pension lay al most exclusively with large companies.

5 Ways to Demonstrate Air Pressure to Children

5 Ways to Demonstrate Air Pressure to Children 5 Ways to Demonstrate Air Pressure to Children Note A parent should always be presentboth physically and mentallywhen the children are conducting any science experiment at home. Even the simplest experiments have potential for trouble if done wrong. The ordinary pressure of the air surrounding us is 14.7 pounds per square inch, but the pressure can change when the wind blows or an object, like a car or airtuch, accelerates. One important principle to remember is that wherever the air pressure is higher, there will be a stronger force or push against an object. Its also helpful to know that when an air parteicle speeds up, it actually pushes less. Imagine that fast-moving air particles are in so much of a hurry that they dont have time to apply force. This principle is used in airplane wings to make planes fly. When a plane moves along the runway, the air above the wing speeds up more, lowering the pressure, so that the air below the wing can push the plane upward. Also for You How to Homeschool Engineering StudentsDo you want to see if these principles really work? Great Try one or more of the following experimentsWater Glass Trick. Fill a cup one-third with water. Cover the entire mouth with an index card. Holding the card in place, take the cup to the sink and turn it upside down. Remove your hand from underneath. Voil Because the water inside the cup is lighter than the air outside, the card is held in place by about 15 pounds of force from the air pushing up, while the force of the water pushing down is only about one pound of force.Fountain Bottle. Fill a 2-liter soda bottle half full of water. Take a long straw and insert it in the mouth. Wrap a lump of clay around the straw to form a seal. Blow hard into the strawthen stand back. Your blowing increases the air pressure inside the sealed bottle. This higher pressure pushes on the water and forces it up and out the straw.Ping-Pong Funnel. Put a ping-pong ball in side the wide part of a funnel and blow hard into the narrow end. Why doesnt the ball pop out? As you blow into the funnel, the air moves faster and lowers the air pressure underneath the ball. Because the air pressure is higher above the ball than below it, the ball is pushed down into the funnelno matter how hard you blow or which direction you point the funnel. The Million Dollar Bet. Take an empty water or soda bottle and lay it down horizontally on a table. Roll a piece of paper towel into a small ball about half the size of the opening. Tell a friend youll pay $1 million if he or she can blow the ball into the bottle. Dont worry about losing money because this is impossible. No matter how hard someone blows to try to force more air into the bottle, theres no room for it, so it will flow right out, pushing away the paper ball.Kissing Balloons. Blow up two balloons and attach a piece of string to each. Hold one balloon by the string in each hand and position the two balloons so t hat they are at your nose level and 6 inches apart. Blow hard into the space between the balloons. This lowers the air pressure. The pressure of the surrounding air is now higher and it will push the balloons together.Adapted from Top Ten Air Pressure Experiments to Mystify Your Kids-Using Stuff From Around the House, by Aurora Lipper, for Mechanical Engineering, January 2008.Read mora How to Mentor Young EngineersExperiential Learning and Cooperative Education Pay OffEngineering Education, Family Style

stop putting your salary history on your resume

stop putting your salary history on your resume stop putting your salary history on your resume A reader writesI was very curious to see what you thought of this document that I found off of a job listing on usajobs.org entitled Resume Tips. I find it very odd that they recommend to have salary and hours listed for every job performed. The specific job I ended up applying for required the hours for each job and volunteer activity listed. I wasnt quite sure how to format that nicely while leaving other important details on there as well.Well, it looks like theyre talking about applications for federal jobs, which are a whole different ballgame and not at all representative of normal resumes.Federal hiring is so different and comes with such odd requirements that one day we will hear that the federal job application process now requires that you submit a complete list of all pets youve ever had and their birth dates, and that it must be presented in iambic pentameter.Federal hiring is n ot like other hiring. However, Im going to use this as an opportunity to say loudly to everyone else STOP PUTTING YOUR SALARY INFO ON YOUR RESUME. It does not belong there.Other things that dont belong on your resume the weekly hours for each job (this is another weird federal jobs thing, if its being required at all) the reason you left each job the name of your manager at each job each employers address reference informationIf you are applying for a federal job or in some other weird situation where unusual information is being required on your resume, include it wherever it looks neatest. But know that it is not normal and not a thing that you should carry over to applying for other jobs.

Certified Systems Engineers Are in High Demand

Certified Systems Engineers Are in High Demand Certified Systems Engineers Are in High Demand Certified Systems Engineers Are in High Demand Systems engineering integrates all engineering disciplines and specialty groups for a project into an efficient, streamlined process that smoothly takes the project from concept to production to operation, meeting all the business and technical goals of the project. Systems engineers are in high demand around the world and professional certification gives them a competitive advantage. Systems engineers work closely with program managers to ensure the requirements of all relevant stakeholders are met in a balanced way in the realized system solution, says David Walden, president and principal consultant for Sysnovation LLC and certification program manager for The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). They also ensure that risks have been properly handled and all of the necessary life-cycle considerations have been taken into account. As development efforts continue to stretch beyond both organizational and country boundaries, the skill set of the systems engineer becomes even more valuable. Systems engineering is a relatively new discipline, getting its start with military and space programs in the mid-1960s. INCOSE was formed in 1990 and has grown to over 8,000 members in over 50 countries. INCOSE introduced its professional certification program in 2004 and currently has about 1,250 certified systems engineering professionals. A Competitive Field Systems engineers are in high demand by industry and government. A systems engineer translates technical needs into an overall system architecture that creates the best operational capability at the most affordable cost, states Paul Martin, Serco-NA systems engineering community of practice lead, INCOSE representative, and University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) Training Center instructor for preparation for the INCOSE certified systems engineering professional test. As a project proceeds and goals or needs shift, systems engineers have to determine the difficult but necessary cost, schedule, and performance trade-offs to keep everything on track. Systems engineers are essential for the technical management, development, and acquisition of complex technology systems. The systems engineer is the translator between program management and the engineering domains being used on a project, says Martin. The systems engineer can relate to the engineers the concerns of the project manager in terms the engineer can understand, and also speak to the manager of the engineering concerns in terms the manager can understand. Getting Certified Certification provides benefits to both the individuals that get certified and their organizations. We are seeing INCOSE certification being used in numerous job advertisements and we are beginning to see our certifications being referenced in requests for proposals, says Walden. The INCOSE certification program provides three levels of credentials: expert systems engineering professional (ESEP), certified systems engineering professional (CSEP), and associate systems engineering professional (ASEP). These certifications are designed for increasing levels of leadership, accomplishments, and experience. Several schools also provide systems engineering certification, such as the University of Arizona and University of Washington (UW). The UW certificate program is a one-year, 13-credit program that offers a series of integrated lectures that focus on systems engineering, finance, project management, and supply chain concepts. It is enhanced by a seminar series called Developing the Global Perspective. The program concludes with a design project where the students design a systems-based solution and a viable business case. The graduate certificate that UW offers is a path to obtain a body of knowledge without having to pursue a full master's degree, says Christina M. Mastrangelo, associate professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Washington. It gives students an opportunity to either earn a credential for work they currently do or to enhance their current skill set to pursue other opportunities. Earning INCOSE's CSEP certification isn't easy. Candidates must demonstrate real-world experience against 14 activities via a lengthy application, as well as supply three references to verify that experience. They must also pass a two-hour, 120-question, multiple-choice exam. A lot of my students in my CSEP Preparation course at the UMBC Training Center tend to focus too much on the exam, says Martin. My advice is to concentrate on filling out the application and getting your three references first. It's more time-consuming than you'll realize and you need to spend that time to get it right. Once your application is approved you'll have plenty of time to study for the exam. INCOSE's multi-level certification program helps both individuals and organizations break through to the next level, providing an internationally recognized competitive advantage. Professional certification through INCOSE formally confirms your systems engineering qualifications, says Walden. It is an effective way for your colleagues to recognize your systems engineering knowledge and experience. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. We are seeing INCOSE certification being used in numerous job advertisements and we are beginning to see our certifications being referenced in requests for proposals.David Walden, president and principal consultant, Sysnovation LLC, and certification program manager, INCOSE

5 Signs You Belong in a Different Job

5 Signs You Belong in a Different Job 5 Signs You Belong in a Different Job It’s called work for a reason. It’s usually not easy, and it’s not always enjoyable. That said, you don’t have to dread going to work every day. There is hope for a brighter future. If you are miserable at work, it will be difficult to find true success and happiness in any part of your life. Consider the idea that you can enjoy your job Most days should end with a feeling that you are in the right place and with a sense of accomplishment. Maybe your biggest passion in life does not align with your employment options. You love woodworking but you have a Masters in Marketing. That’s ok. If your career isn't your passion, it should at least provide what you needto build the life you want. You deserve better. Somewhere along the way you had passion and drive. If you’re not feeling that excitement at your current job, it’s time to ask yourself why. Here are 5 signs pointing to a new direction Do any of these signs look or sound familiar to you? 1. The snooze button is your new best friend Do you find that you hit the snooze button more often than you check your email? When did you lose the pep in your step to get up for work? Was it ever there in the first place? Most of us enjoy a few extra minutes of sleep, especially on Monday morning. But if this has become your norm, it might be the first sign that change is needed. 2. The stress of your job ismaking you sick The research is out there. Stress suppresses the immune system, which makes it easier for you to get sick. It becomes harder for you to fight off infections. Are you in a toxic working environment? Do you have unreasonable expectations coming from your boss? Are you working too hard for too little? When these stressors pile up, you can become overwhelmed and unable to function at your best. What is knocking you down at work? Is there room for change, or is it time to make a move? 3. The management style is one of ridicule rather than encouragement You put your best foot forward every day and give 100% to your job. You’re going in early and staying late. Still, the numbers are down and the team is not doing well overall. Your dedication meets threats and attacks rather than constructive criticism and encouragement. You don’t have clear guidelines to follow for improvement. You feel defeated and hopeless. This style of management is hard to undo, there are better options for you. 4. You feel like you’re fighting an uphill battle You are an agent of change. You crave growth and constant improvement. Bad news, the motto at the office is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. You know it can be better, but your suggestions get shot down, ignored, or flat out criticized. If you’ve done your best to communicate your ideas to no avail, then don’t feel guilty for wanting to move on. There are companies that will appreciate your drive and ingenuity. 5. The company is operating in a state of chaos Every day is filled with confusion and inefficiency. The team lacks focus and direction. Your job feels impossible. Everyone is scurrying to pick up the pieces from the last round of miscommunication. The mission fades and morale becomes nonexistent. Can you fix it? Can you untangle all the mixed up lines of communication? Probably not. Good news, there is something better for you out there. You just have to want it and then take the steps to find it. Here’s the bottom line Sometimes a few slight adjustments on your part will get you back to enjoying your job. Other times you're met with dysfunction beyond your control that will have you running for the door. Which is it for you? If it’s the latter, then use this opportunity to start the process of finding the job that brings you back to center.

Salary Negotiation Isnt Pretty

Salary Negotiation Isn't Pretty Salary Negotiation Isn't Pretty When it comes to salary, women tend to take the agreeable route to avoid negotiating. But it doesn’t have to be a choice.By Lee E. Miller and Jessica MillerDavia Temin, president of Temin Co. and former head of corporate marketing for General Electric Capital, remembers the exact moment she realized “almost everything is negotiable if you see it that way.” When she got out of business school, she accepted her first job as assistant to the director of development at the Columbia Business School without really negotiating. While working there, however, she saw something that changed her view of what was possible. She had always assumed if you weren’t accepted at Columbia you either went to another business school or pursued something else. A few students, however, when they were rejected, sought out the director of admissions and asked what they could do to change her mind. To Davia’s amazement, the director did not simply send them away. She told them if they took four semes ters of Advanced Calculus and Statistics and got an A in each, she would admit them. A handful of students took her up on her offer and were admitted. At that point Davia realized that, “way more things were negotiable than I had previously thought.” So she decided to learn how to negotiate. Some women are uncomfortable with the idea of negotiating. Yet all day, every day we negotiate, even though we don’t necessarily think about it that way. While some people have more natural ability than others, no one is born a great negotiator. Negotiating is a skill that has to be learned. Many women who think they are not good negotiators simply have never been taught how. According to the highly successful women we interviewed for A Woman’s Guide to Successful Negotiating, there are a number of common mistakes that women make:Just AskMany women fail to recognize that opportunities to negotiate exist in almost every interaction we have, especially when it comes to compensation. They te nd to look at situations in terms of decisions they have to make, rather than opportunities to negotiate. Women sometimes do not ask for things they want, out of fear of damaging a relationship. This fear often holds women back and prevents them from getting what they deserve. We call this the “Empathy Trap.” If you ask in the right way, you can get what you want and maintain or even strengthen your relationship. It never hurts to ask. Almost everything is negotiable if you see it that way. While you may not get everything you ask for, you will be amazed at what you can get.Put Yourself FirstBoth men and women find it difficult negotiating for themselves, but women often have an even harder time doing so. Even a woman who is an exceptional negotiator, and who has no trouble negotiating on behalf of her organization, will often have a difficult time when it comes to negotiating for herself. Many a woman was raised to believe that asking for things for herself was being selfish. S ometimes just recognizing the tendency to put others’ needs ahead of your own is sufficient to avoid making this mistake. If you do your homework, you will know what is fair and reasonable to ask for. Don’t settle for less. One technique that can help is to see yourself as negotiating for someone else. Think about what you would do if you were advocating on behalf of someone whom you care about. Then do it.Say “No”Women also sometimes have difficulty saying “no,” particularly when they are dealing with someone they care about. Because women place a high value on relationships, they do not like saying “no.” They have a difficult time believing that if they say no, it won’t negatively affect the relationship. But being able to say “no” is critical when you are negotiating. It is frequently necessary to say no before you can get to yes. Successful negotiators know when and how to say “no.”You do not have to say “no” loudly or aggressively. If, however, an offer is less than you think it should be, you need to point that out politely but firmly. If the person you are dealing with can’t, or won’t, improve the offer, you need to be willing to walk away. Being willing to say “no” to something that does not meet your needs will often result in the person you are dealing with finding a way to satisfy those needs, at least if you are flexible and willing to work with him.Saying “no” is not personal. It is simply a way to exchange information. Looked at that way, saying “no” becomes a lot easier, as does accepting it from someone with whom you are negotiating. These common negotiating mistakes are relatively easy to correct once you become aware that you are making them. Alexis Glick, former anchor and vice president of business news at the Fox Business Network, captured the essence of what negotiating can do for you, when she stated: “If you know how to negotiate you control your own destiny. You don’t have to rely on oth ers to do it for you.” Learning to negotiate will empower you. Negotiating well will help you get what you deserve, not only in business but in your personal life as well. Once you master the art of negotiating, you will come to recognize that the only real limits to what you can achieve are those you place on yourself.EDITORS’ NOTE: This article is adapted from the just-released ” A Woman’s Guide to Successful Negotiating ” (McGraw-Hill, 2010) by Lee E. Miller and Jessica Miller.

Parenting Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True - The Muse

Parenting Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True - The Muse Parenting Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True Alright, so maybe eating a bunch of carrots didn’t keep you from needing glasses, and no, you never actually went blind from sitting too close to the TV. But, that doesn’t mean that all of the advice your parents gave you is completely bogus. In fact, your folks probably dished out their fair share of clichés and proverbs that are actually pretty applicable to your career and professional life now. Of course, you probably rolled your eyes and sighed dramatically at the time and were all, “You don’t get it, you still call Twitter, ‘Tweeter.’” But, it’s never too late to put that advice to work. Here are five sentiments from dear old Mom and Dad that are more applicable than you ever believed they would be. And don’t worry- you don’t need to tell them that they were right. 1. “You Catch More Flies With Honey” Preaching kindness must be on the first page of the “parent handbook,” as they’re always quick to remind you that thoughtfulness is the way to go. Obviously, there are occasions when you need to be a bit more stern and direct in the workplace- like when your intern comes in late for the umpteenth time. But, in general, you can’t go wrong with being polite. It’s human nature, really. When people are kind to us, we feel inclined to be kind to them. Plus, being more friendly and upbeat in your office not only impresses your team and does wonders when it comes to fostering better work relationships, but it’s also likely to improve your attitude toward your daily work. So, bring in bagels and donuts every now and then, compliment your co-worker on a job well done, or perform a completely random act of kindness. You’ll be surprised how much your entire work environment- and mindset- will change by just being nicer. 2. “Never Burn Your Bridges” We all know the far too catchy Disney song, “It’s a Small World After All.” Annoying as it may be- and I do apologize that it’s now stuck in your head- the sentiment definitely holds water. Let’s face it; the business world is actually pretty darn small- especially if you’re in a more niche industry. So, you always need to be mindful of maintaining positive relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and peers. Keeping this advice in mind is especially critical when resigning from a position (yes, even if it’s one you hated!). It’s important to turn in your notice in a way that’s respectful and professional, regardless of how much you want to throw both middle fingers in your boss’ face. After all, you never quite know who your boss is connected with, which former co-workers you’ll encounter in the future, or who’ll get called for a back-channel reference. 3. “It’s Not Always About What You Know, But Who” Oh, the undeniable power of connections. Does this scenario sound familiar? You’re being considered for a job you know you’d be amazing at, and you’re confident you completely nailed the interview. A few days later, you receive the dreaded “thanks, but no thanks” email, letting you know that the company’s moved forward with a different candidate- and then, just when you’re moving on from the rejection, you discover the boss’ neighbor’s cousin’s daughter landed your dream job. Chances are, that rude awakening was soon followed by this little pep talk from one of your parents. Unfortunately, it’s true. The most qualified person isn’t always the one who gets the job. So, how can you apply this to your professional life today? Continue building your network- work on it every single week. Join industry associations and attend local networking events. Set up informational interviews with companies you love and people you admire. Putting yourself out there can be scary (and even feel unnecessary when you like your current position), but assembling a powerful set of contacts will give you a leg up on the competition when you need it. 4. “Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day” We all know that your first job likely isn’t going to be your dream job. (Or even your first few.) No, it takes your fair share of grunt work before you even get close to where you want to be in your career. But, there’s nothing wrong with working your way up the ladder. It can be frustrating to feel like you’re going nowhere in your position and you’re not directly contributing to the bottom line- especially when you know you’re capable of doing much more important work. But, as your parents loved to remind you, progress takes time. It’s not an overnight transformation. Plus, there’s an upside: You’re immediately likable if you’re the one who brings the coffee. At the very least, you’ve got that going for you. 5. “Actions Speak Louder Than Words” Not only was this statement likely printed on a poster hanging in your kindergarten classroom, but you probably heard it plenty from your parents, too. Well, Mom and Dad were right- again. Saying something and actually doing it are two completely different things. Anybody can state on his or her resume or in the interview that he or she’s a skilled team builder or a Photoshop expert. But, the proof is in the pudding, and you’re going to need to be able to put your money where your mouth is. (Like that? I squeezed two bonus parentisms in here for you!) The same applies to office relationships and conflicts. It’s easy to apologize to your boss or a co-worker for a mistake you made. If you continue to repeatedly make that mistake again and again? Now you’ve got problems. Follow up everything you say at work with a real, live corresponding action. Don’t have time? Then don’t tell someone otherwise- it’s as simple as that. Sure, your parents probably didn’t actually trudge three miles to school, uphill both ways, barefoot in a snowstorm. But, once you move past the exaggerated stories and eyeroll-worthy “parentisms,” you’ll likely see that they actually know what they’re talking about. After all, you might as well take the advice from someone who’s been through it all before. Photo of father and son courtesy of Shutterstock.

The first sentence cleverly reveals both her overall demeanor as a teacher and the fact that she lived in France long enough to acquire perfect language fluency among native speakers. The summary then conveys the most important professional skills in her repertoire. Many resumes are discarded after a glance at the summary statement, so approach the summary as if you h ave only three sentences to tell your future employers why they should hire you, just as the sample resume does. The core qualifications section contains six bullet points, each reflecting the most important specialized skills for a French teacher. It is concise and visually easy to take in at a glance, so a recruiter can quickly assess that this jobseeker has what it takes and should be contacted for an interview. The experience section on this French teacher resume sample is not overbearing or long, but it is potent. This teacher has taught at two previous schools but uses her work history to its full advantage by presenting her duties and contributions with brief, effective bullet points that all begin with carefully chosen action verbs. It is arranged chronologically, beginning at present. This is the best arrangement for the experience section, as your most recent accomplishments will be read first and your less impressive entry-level jobs will be at the end. This jobseeker is not afraid to represent the value-added work teachers often do, such as implementing a travel abroad program to give her students the chance to practice their new language skills with native speakers. The final education section is short and simple. When you craft your own resume, follow this model and include only the pertinent information: the year of graduation, degree earned, major area of study, name of the institution, city, and state. Why You Need a Strong French Teacher ResumeEducators and schools face increasing media attention and public scrutiny due to a range of issues, from poor student test scores to financial woes, so your resume must present you as an indispensable asset to your prospective school community. Many people graduate with a degree in education, but not many people can successfully teach a new language to their students. An effective French teacher resume must concretely demonstrate that you have the skills and experience to do so. By patterning your resume after our French teacher resume sample, you can show your abilities to best advantage and land an interview.Costly French Teacher Resume Mistakes To AvoidClearly, all jobseekers need to avoid glaring errors such as untruths, typos, and incorrect grammar. Teachers, and language teachers in particular, may be scrutinized even more closely; effective written communication is critical in this field, so nothing less than written perfection on your resume will do. Avoid these errors by triple checking your work. Paying for a professional copyedit is not excessive - your future career is on the line.Because teachers tend to be helping, giving personalities, they also tend to sell themselves short on their resumes. This is a huge mistake - your future employer will not value you higher than you value yourself. Your first chance to reflect your worth as an educator is a great, honest resume that draws attention to your accomplishments. Notice how the teacher in the French teacher resume sa mple used specific details and action verbs to communicate the full value of her contributions to her previous schools in the experience section.ConclusionWriting a perfect resume for your field and circumstances requires the best of your written communication skills. Power from a Second Skin

Power from a Second Skin Power from a Second Skin Power from a Second Skin Its an undulating, bending, twisting, world out there. Winds blow, leaves rustle, waters rise and fall; bodies run, jump, and reach; hearts beat; and lungs swell and deflate. Every movement, no matter how small, is a potential source of power. But just how do we access that power? And once accessed, how do we put that power to everyday use. To harvest energyfrom daily lifewalking talking, human motionthe efficiency of electromagnetic generation is very low. It cannot do it, says Zhong Lin Wang, a professor of materials science and engineering at Georgia Tech. Wangs solution is a thin stretchy material he calls STENG, for skin-like triboelectric nanogenerator. In short, two layers of elastomer sandwich a hydrogel, which acts as the electrode. A triboelectric charge builds up on the outer layers and creates a current when it leaps from one side to the other. The gel itself has been around, but has never been used for this purpose, Wang says. With thehydrogel, the elastomers elasticity isnt compromised and the material can stretch nearly 400 percent. Its also transparent. Sheets of the material can be worn on the skin, integrated with any kind of clothing, or coat anything that moves. A STENG-based tactile sensor. Image: Georgia Tech You can light up an array of LED lights, drive a smart watch, or send wireless communications, Wang says. Charging a cell phone would need substantial human activity, but in principal you can. But allowing humans to power their own gadgets as they perform daily activities is only one of the STENGS benefits. It can also be used as a medical sensor, which can transfer data over bluetooth. But it has applications well beyond the human as well. Robots can also benefit from the materials sensing abilities. Currently, most robotic hands apply the same amount of pressure to whatever they might pick up. An egg gets as much squeeze as a brick, to the detriment of the egg. But with STENG on its fingers, robots can measure how much pressure they are applying to an object and automatically adjust to the appropriate level. Farmers hoping to study the humidity distribution over their fields could make a flag with the STENG. Powered by the wind, it could detect humidity levels and wirelessly send along the information. And in the expanding world of the Internet of Things, those things will be able to better power themselves, sense their surroundings and communicate. The coating may eventually become an efficient alternative to the windmill. Todays windmills are massive affairs, in both size and cost. And they turn only in strong winds. The giant blades are unmoved by gentle breezes that pass over them, their potential as a source of power gone to waste. But with a giant tree with thousands of rustling and waving STENG coated leaves, we could profit from the slightest of winds. Wang and his team are currently working on ways to make their skin more robust and energetically profitable. We can work for ten million cycles without degradation, Wang says. For humans thats long enough. Treesand robots might need stronger stuff. But while there may be obvious room for improvement, STENG is already on its way to real applications. The technology, medical, and automotive industries are already talking to Wang. He says in a matter of two to three years, products could be using STENG. Texting while walking may still make you collision prone, but at least the latter will soon power the former. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. You can light up an array of LED lights, drive a smart watch, or send wireless communications. Charging a cell phone would need substantial human activity, but in principal you can. Is Your Cover Letter Robot-Approved - ATS Cover Letter

Is Your Cover Letter Robot-Approved - ATS Cover Letter Is Your Cover Letter Robot-Approved - ATS Cover Letter Job seekers hate writing them and hiring managers get bored reading them, so why  are cover letters still necessary? Many wishful thinkers have emphatically declared cover letters dead in recent years, but the fact remains that cover letters still stand between you and many available jobs. When applying online, the cover letter might be your first opportunity to appeal to a real life human being, but that person still has to read it. An overlooked piece of  advice is to consider your audience not just the hiring manager but the tech they utilize. Cover Letters Must Be Searchable The first obstacle for your cover letter might be getting past a bot that wont be moved by your elegant prose or inspiring story. Most larger companies utilize software  that creates a searchable database of job applicants. Rather than manually reading every single resume submitted, hiring managers shrink their pool of applicants by searching the database for specific skills and keywords. Any applicant without one of those keywords might be eliminated by the program sight unseen. Based on Jobscans research, Taleo, the most-used applicant tracking system out there, treats cover letters as searchable text just like the resume. Other application processes require the applicant to tack their letter to the end of their resume document. In these scenarios, your letter could be key to surviving the first round of cuts before its ever even seen by human eyes. Targeted Keywords Boost Searchability Hiring managers identify their best candidates and narrow down their pool of applicants by searching with exact keyword combinations found in the job description. Jobscan recommends tailoring your resume  to the job description. Your cover letter deserves the same treatment. Ensuring that your cover letter contains key skills from the job description is especially important if youre transitioning careers. If job-critical skills werent part of your past work experience, your cover letter must pick up the slack. Demonstrating knowledge of the missing skills and highlighting non-professional experience in your letter can help you get past the filters and show the hiring manager that youre qualified for the job. Test Scan Your Cover Letter In addition to unlimited resume scans, Jobscan Premium users also receive unlimited cover letter scans. The scan makes sure your cover letter is the optimal length, contains contact information and measurable results, and doesnt have any cliche buzz words. Perhaps most importantly, the report generates a list of hard and soft skills (keywords) found in job listing that should be featured in your cover letter. Users can find out where their cover letters are falling short  free for one month. Write a Great Cover Letter Optimizing your cover letter with keywords will help you survive the hiring managers filters but its just one part of the equation. You still need to write something that will win over the hiring manager once they finally read it. Jobscans Learning Center features  cover letter quick tips and in-depth guides to point you in the right direction.

Aquaculture Farmers

Aquaculture Farmers Aquaculture Farmers Aquaculture farmers raise fish and shellfish for the purposes of consumption, population restocking, or for use as bait. Duties Aquaculture technicians are responsible for feeding the fish, restocking tanks, performing tests to ensure water quality and temperature, checking the health of the fish population, notifying veterinarians of any noted health concerns, and properly cleaning and maintaining the ponds or tanks. Aquaculture managers are responsible for managing technicians and maintenance personnel while ensuring high standards of production are maintained. Managers are concerned with various administrative tasks, business planning, financial management, and facility management. Those working in the aquaculture industry must be prepared to work long and often irregular hours which may include some shifts on nights, weekends, and holidays. Work often occurs outdoors in varying weather conditions and may be physically demanding. Career Options Positions in aquaculture include technicians, water quality specialists, maintenance personnel, site managers, and production managers. Some of these jobs may be part-time or seasonal in nature, though more than half of all aquaculture jobs are full-time positions. Aquaculture farmers can own their own operation or find employment with a large commercial production facility. Many operations specialize in producing one specific type of fish (in the U.S., the most popular species being catfish, trout, bass, or tilapia) or shellfish. Aquaculture operations may supply fish for food, fishing bait, pond stocking, or aquariums. Some small aquaculture producers operate a retail shop to sell their consumable fish products directly to consumers, but most fish produce travels down the commercial distribution chain through various processing facilities before reaching a retail store. Aquaculture personnel may also find positions as educators, especially if they hold an advanced degree in the field. Those with masters or Ph.D. degrees may teach at the college level, conduct research studies, and publish their findings in scientific journals and industry trade publications. Other solid options in the field include aquaculture health sales or aquaculture feed product sales. Education Training Most entry-level aquaculture careers require candidates to at least hold a high school diploma. Upper-level management positions in aquaculture generally require a bachelors or even a masters degree. There are many schools offering undergraduate or graduate studies in aquaculture and related fields, and the number of schools with such programs is rapidly increasing. Aquaculture-related programs can be found at a number of large schools across the United States such as University of Maine, Mississippi State University, Louisiana State University, Texas A M University, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, University of California, University of Washington, and University of Hawaii (just to name a few). The World Aquaculture Society also maintains an extensive list of aquaculture programs worldwide. Many students of aquaculture choose to seek an internship in the industry during their college years. During these internships, students have the opportunity to assist with experiments designed to advance the productivity and growth of the species of fish or shellfish they are studying. Students also gain valuable hands-on experience that will later feature prominently on their resumes. Those involved with aquaculture should have a good working knowledge of animal science with a specific focus on fish (including anatomy, physiology, biology, and production). Skills in business management, marketing, advertising, personnel management, and accounting may also prove useful to managers and farm operators. Salary Salaries in the aquaculture industry can vary widely based on the type of position, the size of the operation, geographic location, and the employee̢۪s prior experience in the industry. SimplyHired.com cited the average salary for a fish farmer as $71,000 in 2019. An aquaculture technician could earn about $35,000, while a director of a large commercial operation could earn over $150,000. As with most industries, those with specialized knowledge of specific facets of the industry will tend to earn higher salaries than the average. Job Outlook According to the SeaGrant program at the University of Connecticut, aquaculture is the fastest growing segment of the entire animal production industry. In fact, the aquaculture industry is credited with pulling in over $100 billion per year in sales worldwide. There are well over 4,000 aquaculture farms in the United States alone. The latest United States Department of Agriculture Census of Aquaculture data indicates that while the number of trout and catfish farms declined slightly from 2002 to 2007, the number of farms producing all other food fish, baitfish, sports fish, ornamental fish, mollusks, and crustaceans increased across the board. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics and other agencies point out that the number of positions in aquaculture may show a slight decline (despite the increase in overall farm production and consumption) due to the increasing use of machines for maintenance tasks.
