On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Know If You're a Toxic Sponge Are you the one that colleagues or your boss turn to when there is a crisis or they just need to unload their negative baggage? Do you then feel pressure to fix whatever is going wrong as they walk away feeling better from having unloaded their troubles on you? If so, you may be a toxic sponge. While others find your calm demeanor and attentive presence reassuring and comforting, the reality is that you can only absorb so much negativity. Maybe you like being a trusted employee or colleague and want to feel that you can be counted on in times of trouble. But there are ways to do that while still maintaining an emotional equilibrium that lets you be of service without absorbing all that negativity. Consider: Knowing when to step aside. You dont become a mental health professional just by watching Dr. Phil. If a colleague or boss has serious problems such as an addiction, an abusive relationship or comes to you again and again with the same complaints, then its time to suggest they seek professional help. Dont try to be an armchair psychiatrist. Learn to back off from this person so he or she will be forced to admit professional assistance is needed. As long as you continue to absorb the problem, things wont get better. Setting limits. When youre a toxic sponge, others may not recognize that youre overloaded because you seem to so calmly accept whatever they say and want to help. The Disney Princesses Re-imagined As Ms Career Girls The Disney princesses have been a significant part of our culture since Snow White made her debut 80 years ago. In many ways, they have become more than just animated character in movies. They are characters that others look to as role models and for inspiration. In recent years, talented artists have created reminagings of the princesses as many things. But there is one that no one had done: empowered women with modern jobs. With that in mind, Matt Burt, a graphic artists who works on special projects for Simple Thrifty Living, created a beautiful set of illustrations that show the princesses as women with those roles. He worked alongside David Cusick, his coworker, and other team members to choose the right roles for each princess. “One of our goals in this project was to have the women excelling in their job,” said Cusick. “We wanted them to be at the top of their careers or headed that way and we also wanted them to be in roles that are traditionally male dominated.” Another goal was to make sure that the career matched the personality and characteristic of the princess. The idea is that these are jobs the women love to go to every day and roles that they are passionate about. The team said they created these to help inspire others. When asked about feedback on the artwork, Burt said the responses have been truly touching. “People from across the world have been reaching out to tell me how much they’ve enjoyed the illustrations,” Burt told Ms Career Girl. “Women have messaged me saying they’ve printed out the art and hung in up in their daughter’s room. It’s very humbling. My favorite messages are from teachers asking to use them in their classroom. My mom is a teacher so that’s special to me.” It’s good to see these princesses as empowered women. A Complete Guide to Hiring Front-End Developers CareerMetis.com

A Complete Guide to Hiring Front-End Developers Original Image Source â€" Depositphotos.comThe first thing clients see when they visit a website is its user interface. A well-made and engaging UI makes a product look more trustworthy and shows the brand’s individuality. And to create a high-end user interface, you need to hire front-end developers. So, as we know for good what are the common pains of this uneasy process, we’ve created this guide that helps to deal with all the questions. The Seniority of Front-End DevelopersUsually, developers are divided into three categories â€" junior, middle, and seniorengineers.evalAll according to their skills. So let’s check them in more detail and find out which one you better hire and not to overpay.a) Junior DevsevalJunior developers are often familiar with just one programming language or framework. That’s why they are capable of solving a limited number of tasks. In a perfect world, juniors can build a stable app that carries out most of the functions it should.Experience â€" 0-1 yearsb) Middle Senior DevsAs developers gain seniority, they become more skilled in building apps and tailoring them to specific business logic. They examine business aims and allocated budget and choose suitable tools to make the most of it. A highly-skilled developer can offer a few ways of solving an issue and explain the benefits of each approach.Experience â€" 3-5+ yearsc) But Which One You Need to Hire? You may already want to go only for top-skilled senior devs, but mind that you can’t count talent in years. Some juniors can have all the skills needed for your project, despite their lack of experience. But the best way to find out if they are capable of delivering your product is to find someone with a tech background to interview the candidates. The Responsibilities of Front-End DevelopersevalBefore you start looking for the best candidates, it’s better to learn what responsibilities they bear. Here are the main of them:Create a layout of an app But there are lots of other tools and technologies front-end devs should know how to work with. Here’s just a basic list:Responsive design;Preprocessors for CSS like Sass and SCSS;Frameworks like Angular, React, Vue, or others;AJAX;Backbone.js or jQuery;CSS frameworks like Foundation or Bootstrap;Browser dev tools;Testing/debugging;Module bundlers like Webpack;Version control systems like Git.Sure, experienced front-end developers are more skilled. For instance, senior devs often work with back-end languages and frameworks In-house devs are much more interested in positive project results and are less likely to leave, unlike freelancers. They will also work from your office, thus you’ll have full control of the team and can delegate additional tasks to the employees. But first, you’ll have to find an office, furnish it, get hardware and software, and, finally, convince the devs to work for you.Pros of In-House Teams:Great for long-term projects delivery;Work longer and often become well-cooperated team p layers;Urgent tech tasks will be handled quickly.Cons of-House Teams:High salaries;Hard to find Expenses on software, hardware, office rent, taxes, etc.Takes time to interview and onboard in-house devs. iii) Outsourced DevelopersevalNow, lots of companies choose to outsource website developmentto offshore IT firms.Let’s see how it works. You hire front-end devs in an offshore firm from any country you like Remember that any misunderstandings between customers and developers may lead to time and money losses. But making a project specification is a quite complex task, so outsourcing companies often help with carrying it out.b) Sign the Contract Working without a contract means working with unpredicted risks behind your back. So it’s always better to protect yourself and add every rule to the documents that help to regular your working relationship. The most important points are the terms and money expenses. Besides, you might not want to disclose any details until the product gets released. In this case, there’s a solution â€" signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).c) Work in SprintsThe Agile approach offers to divide a project into small springs and receive deliverables by specified deadlines. The major benefit is the ability to track progress and avoid setbacks. But that’s what devs and project managers take care of.Average Hourly Rates of Front-end DevelopersNow, time to take a look at front-end dev rates by countries and hiring options.i) Freelance ratesAccording to a Codementor study (in which 5,302 freelance devs took part), the highest average rates are in the USAand Australia. The max difference between these regions is 40%.And here’s a list of more affordable countries that allow you to save up to 40%.As you see, juniordevs are willing to work for $41-60/h, and middledevs charge $61-80/h. And as for seniordevs, they rates vary from $101-120(North America) to $81-101(Africa).ii) In-house Devs’ SalariesIf you hire developers to work full-time from your office, you’ll be more interested in their annual payments. According to PayScale, the average salary of in-house devs starts at $6,206 (India) and goes up to $68,600 (North America). Here are the most popular regions and annual salaries offered there.REGIONAVERAGE SALARYNorth America$68,600Australia$51,493Western Europe$50,955Canada$44,069Eastern Europe$21,956As you see, the most expensive regions predictably are the USA, Australia, and Western Europe.iii) Outsourced Developers RatesAs for front-end outsourcing rates, they seem to follow the same pattern. The most expensive regions are North America and Australia and the cheapest â€" Asia and Eastern Europe. [table “HiringFront-EndDevelopersOutsourceddevelopersrates” not found /]In conclusion, I’d like to say that hiring a front-end devs may seem a bit overwhelming. There are too many options available, too many specialists, and too many points to keep in mind. Still, the main trick is understanding your project re quirements and looking for a team that works best for you â€" whether it’s freelance devs, in-house teams, or outsourced front-end engineers.Additional Resources:A Complete Guide to Hiring Node.js DevelopersA Complete Guide to Hiring AngularJS DevelopersA Complete Guide to Hiring Dedicated DevelopersA Complete Guide to Hiring iOS App DevelopersA Complete Guide to Hiring JavaScript Developers

Motivation Monday

Motivation Monday Someone wants to hire you.   They just havent found you yet! It is possible, even probable, that a company needs someone exactly like you.   They just dont know it or they havent found you yet! How will they find you? It is a game of odds and chance. Be crystal clear about what you are looking for when you talk to people. Be passionate and confident about your experiences and the skills and talents you bring to the table. Know that there is no one better suited for that next great job. Believe in you. Believe that it is possible. Make it happen this week. Motivation Monday It is here againMonday.   Either love it or hate it, this week is what you make of it.   Here are some ideas to convert your job search to a proactive initiative, where you are in control! Wear Your Consultant Hat Treat your next interview like you were being hired to be their consultant.   Do your research and be prepared with questions to better assess where their problems are and how you might solve them. Market Your Services Instead of waiting for job postings, get ahead of the curve by identifying employers that would benefit from hiring you.   Build a list of 30, 40, or even 50 employers that hire people to do what you do.   Follow them on LinkedIn to see what they are doing.   Create Google Alerts with their company name to see what is being said across the internet. Follow them on Twitter and Google +.   And most importantly, tell everyone you know that you would like to meet someone who works in those companies to learn more about what they are doing and if you may be a fit. Take Action You have been given names of people to follow up with dont slack.   Just because you havent heard back from them yet, doesnt mean they arent interested in speaking with you.   Give them a really really good reason to want to speak with you and be persistent.       All you are doing is asking for 30 minutes of their time (or less over the phone).   Make it easy for them by proposing a place and time.   Always reference the person who referred you. And by all means, be polite.   Keep asking if you dont hear back.   No response does not equal no it only means they havent responded.   Keep pursuing. Lose the emotions Your emotions are preventing you from moving forward.   I dont care how you do it, but youve got to turn yourself around. Stop being negative. Stop the self-talk that sets you spiraling downward. If you cant do this alone (which you may not be able to, get professional help!) Motivation Monday This is Thanksgiving week, and to celebrate, lets get out our gratitude journals! Each day this week, write down what your are grateful for in your life. Simple. Yet, I know I find many many things every day that piss me off.   It is easy for me to let these negative thoughts impact my ability to advance and take positive steps forward. On Thursday, when you are surrounded by friends and family, take the extra step to tell them why you appreciate them or what you are most thankful for at that moment in time! Let your positive juices flow and lets see what happens! Motivation Monday This week, starting today, I am hoping you can try to incorporate 3 new behaviors/practices that will alter the way you conduct your job search. Contact several recruiters They do not work FOR you, but with you.   Recruiters often specialize by industry or occupation so ask around and find the names of several.   Why recruiters?   Because, some companies do most of their hiring through these 3rd parties. According to CareerXroads most recent study:   65.7% of survey respondents report they have ‘Master Contracts’ with vendors to supply hourly P/T or professional contract.   Would you be open to taking a contract/temporary assignment?   Consider it one of the best ways to get your foot in the door.   CareerXroads also reported that 50.3% of ALL hires were filled from internal movement. Limit your computer time to off hours Because you have to contact people while they are at work, you will want to maximize the time to allocate for these activities.   Simply put, all your follow up, phone calls, informational meetings, etc has to be done during working hours (8 to 5).   Therefore, submitting resumes online, LinkedIn or other social networking activities, thank you letters and other administrative tasks should be done any time besides 8:00am to 5:00pm. Play matchmaker What better way to leave a lasting impression than to introduce two people whom you believe would benefit from knowing one another.   It could be a personal or professional interest these people share.   Send an email   and address it to both of them.   In the body of the email, indicate how you know each person and why you think they might enjoy meeting each other. You may even want to include in your email a link to each of their LinkedIn profiles.   Your job is done.   They can decide to contact each other or not. It is a new week!   Try and incorporate at least one new strategy! It might just work! Motivation Monday Not only is it Monday, it is also Halloween (and the last day of October)! Gear up for a new month of activities and strategies! What will you add to your job search tool box in November? Update your LinkedIn profile Reach out to family and friends to remind them of what you are looking for Identify people you should be talking to and schedule meetings with them Develop your interviewing skills Assess your job search Change what you are doing Have fun handing out candy tonight and remember how fun Halloween isit is about giving! Motivation Monday It takes so little to make an impact.   Like the metaphor of a drop of water and its ripple effect. It all starts with one single and often simple act (of kindness). So often, during job search, I see and hear of people in isolation.   Isolation that often leads to depression or immobility. When money is tight and things seem bleak, dont turn inward.   Push yourself and practice giving. It doesnt take a lot.   In fact, it may not cost you anything accept your time.   Time is a precious commodity, especially this time of year which makes an even bigger impact. I was touched by this video yesterday.   It said so much and struck a chord with me. At 10 minutes, it may be longer than it needs to be, but watch it and see what you think. ; Video produced by Sharon Wright. It has gained popularity on Unofficial Google + Film Festival. It may be painful or too close for comfort for some but that is exactly why I am sharing it.   No matter how much you have or dont have, you can always help others. Many of you do already, I know.   But there are still many who dont.   It isnt the quantity we give but the quality of the intent with which we give. There are people richer and poorer than me.   But their personal wealth is not the measure I use.   It is their generosity, kindness, selfless giving, concern for others, and awareness of it all that leaves an impact. No matter how much or how little you think you have to give, you can always, always help others! This week how can you give selflessly? What small act of kindness can you perform that will make an impact?

How to Improve Your Communication Skills at Work - Hallie Crawford

How to Improve Your Communication Skills at Work Communication impacts every area of our professional lives. It is the cornerstone to building trusting relationships with others, managing our time effectively, and accomplishing our professional goals. If you are in a management position, effective communication skills are key to you and your team’s effectiveness. However, not everyone is naturally skilled at communicating. Whether you feel you are already good at communicating or know you should improve, reviewing the following tips can help you refine your communication skills.   Determine what method of communication to use. Before communicating with your team, client, or supervisor, determine what kind of communication is most appropriate. A busy manager may feel it’s easier to simply send a text to an employee, but it’s important to note that this is not always the most effective. If what you need to say is not easily understood in a few sentences, it’s better to send an email. If the meaning of the email could be distorted, it’s better to call or speak face to face. And always remember that any sensitive news should be communicated in person, such as a promotion or having to let someone go.   Determine the style of communication that is best for the circumstance. Everyone communicates differently, so to be an effective communicator you have to know how your employees or clients communicate. Think about how your employees communicate with each other: do they use graphs, presentations, text-only emails, phone calls, or something else? One employee may excel at receiving instructions over the phone, while another may do better seeing a graph of the project. Not only will changing your style of communication avoid mishaps, but it will also make your employees more effective.   Action tip: Think about your message and who you are sending it to. Will the message be easy to understand if you use this method of communication? Will the recipient easily understand the method of communication you are going to use? Adjust the method and style of communication accordingly.   Finally, think about your body language. Remember that it’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it. Your body language could be sending mixed signals to your team, clients, or employees. Think about your posture and eye contact when speaking to others. If you look at the floor while communicating with an employee, they may feel that you lack confidence in the project or in them. If you are speaking to a client with your arms crossed, they may feel that you are not at ease in their presence.
